On Cultural Factors in English Idioms and The Translation
Culture covers a wide range, both a nation’s life in the formation of long-term values,mindset and emotions, but also a nation’s lifestyle and communication methods. But because of the differences between English and Chinese in history, there exist enormous cultural differences as carried in these two languages. Meanwhile, language plays an important role in the development of culture, it carries rich cultural connotations and they are difficult to translate. Translation is a form of art, which is the cultural bridge and media between two languages. As there had wide differences in vocabulary and syntax between the oriental and occidental languages, translation is not an easy job, especially the translation of English idioms. “Culture is a complex, including objective material, knowledge, belief, art, morality, laws, customs, some abilities acquired from our society or habits” (Bao, 2001, p.67). So, a nation’s values, social customs and modes of thinking are all well reflected in idioms and should be taken into consideration in translation.
This paper aims at discussing cultural factors in English idioms and their translation through a series of examples and analysis. Meanwhile, as the translation of English idioms cannot be a simple transform of two languages, we sometimes compare English idioms with Chinese idioms and also their literal meanings. This paper divide into four parts according to the needs for discussing cultural factors of English idioms and their translation, which may helpful to those who engaged in translation work.
Idioms are unique and fixed expressions which are used in linguistic communication.
They are the essence of language, and also the quintessence of a nation’s culture and wisdom. As the product of English culture that the nation has accumulated through thousands of years, English idioms are heavily-loaded with cultural information. Therefore, the translation of English idioms should be faithful to their cultural information.Besides, English language has a long history, and it contains a lot of idioms that are implicit, humorous, and elegant. They are not only concise, but also vivid and
groovy. Throughout the ages, idioms animate the works of countless men of literature and writing — their vivid images explicitly convey incisive meanings. Derived from different geography, history, religion, customs and other aspects of daily life, English idioms not only carry the cultural characteristics and cultural information, but also closely link to its own cultural traditions. English and Chinese idioms are complementary, they all have the unity of form and spirit, this makes us better appreciate its feelings and the charm in the course of learning and using English idioms. This thesis probes into the cultural differences in living environments, traditional customs, material cultures, religious beliefs, and historical allusions. It also includes the translation skills of English idioms. The translation of English idioms cannot be a simple transform of two languages; it must be the communication of two cultures. This requires that we need to make clear their literal meaning and true meaning, then deal with them flexibly according to the whole context. It is very important to master the skills to translate English idioms, which will do great help in the course of cultivating the abilities of understanding the language and cross culture communication. Idioms discussed here are in a broad sense, including idioms, proverbs.
