China should release the burden on young children

The release of childrens academic pressure should be a must for this government. Overwhelming pressure in academic study may help children do a good job in the National College Entrance Examination (NCEE). But a shining score is no equal to an all-round development. A promising future of China and the families rely on responsible, wise, capable grown-ups, not on those bookworms.

Children should be freed from terrifying academic pressure as soon as possible. I will change the study room into playroom the moment I have a family. The more the children grow up care freely, the more creative ideas they have, the greater potential they are.

Since the Sui dynasty, China has introduced the imperial examination as a way to select those knowledgeable men out from the ordinary. Descendants of those peasants devoted all their life to be lucky dogs. Some even turned insane after they finally succeeded.

Nowadays these shortcomings are fully understood after years of research. China has made great efforts to carry out quality-oriented education for decades. Law on Quality-Oriented Education was issued in the year of 1991 to ensure the reform in education. Jiangsu province also has improved as many as 5 times their NCEE program in the past 10 years.


But it turns out all these that done are far from enough. Children in different stages bear pressure several times larger than is healthy. Neighbor girls in primary middle school said they have 31 reference books on 9 subjects. Students in primary school even drag schoolbags on wheels to school. One in five students will turn overanxious before exams, while 2.8% have serious anxiety.

It is true that academic subjects can teach children some fundamental knowledge and they can get further education and skills with such knowledge. But I don’t think academic learning can necessarily ensure better future careers. Academic learning is like the fundamental structure of architecture, it can only be improved and perfected by some other decorations, and that means it is supplementary subjects that can refine a child’s development.

Learning literature can make children sensitive to things around them and teach them to be careful observers; music can tell children how to relax themselves and get inspirations through the power of it; sports can build strong wills and bodies for children for it shows to them the spirit of endurance and teamwork. We know that all these qualities are badly needed in children’s social lives in the future, especially when they get along or work with other people, when they confront difficulties or obstacles, and so on.

What our society needs are not people who know nothing besides their textbooks, but people who know how to apply what they learn, know how to appreciate and endure in their lives, that means people with full sensibilities and practical skills; all these are not things children can learn from academic subjects.
