In China, students are separated into two kinds, the science students and the art students. In some universities, there are many majors only available for science students or just for art students. But most of the time, a large variety of majors are open to both science and art students without restriction. Take Guangdong University of Foreign Studies as an example, the Cisco School of Informatics is only open for science students. Before students are admitted into the university, they have to take the NECC, National College Entrance Examination. After the students learn about the scores revealed by the Education Department, the need to apply for universities they want. The most important is to make sure your scores match the requirements of the university. When all the students finish their application forms, the universities will pick up those whose are above the lowest line set by the universities. For example, last year Guangdong University of Foreign Studies picked out the students that were above 604 scores. After that, the admission as well as some other notifications will be delivered to the students when August draws near. What’s more, in Guangwai, there are also some rules for students recommended for admission. Once they are admitted by Guangwai, they can’t take other examinations organized by other universities or the NECC.

Universities in the United States are very different from those of China. In China, most of the top universities are public. However, some


of the top universities in America are private, as a result of which the tuition fee is much higher. Yale University is one of them. Yale University has an admission system called Need Blind Admission. In other words, it does not consider the financial ability of the students’ family. However, it has a scholarship system called Need Based Financial Aid, helping students to release the financial burden. Students will take the exams and apply for several universities. As for Yale, the administrators will pick out those who show great interest in challenging courses instead of the academic marks. Besides, students are supposed to have a strong desire for the majors they choose. What’s more, Yale would like to pick out those showing a serious attitude towards studies. In a word, Yale’s standard for admission is strict as well as flexible. What the students need to do is just to tell their own stories.
