From the houses we live in to the furniture that sets on the deck, to the deck itself, wood is a constant. Our forest and trees are sustainable resources and wood is one of the only renewable and recyclable materials on the market. Today, we are gonna focus on wood you can use outdoors. I’m gonna talk about some of things you need to know about wood and show you why such a good choice for outdoor living projects. By having a clear understanding of this, you’ll be able to serve your customers better and ultimately make your job easier. Let’s get started.
If you are looking to build something that will last, consider the advantages of using pressure-treated wood. It’s the most widely accepted and used outdoor building materials. It’s readily available, affordable, extremely durable and very very strong. Did you know that all alternative deck materials actually call for wood framing underneath? Think about it. If it’s strong enough to hold up your deck, it’s strong enough to be your deck. What makes pressure-treated pine so unique is the deep cellular structure which allows it to hold paints, stains and sealants exceptionally well. It also holds up against foot tracks from both people and pets. Because it’s insect and rot resistant, pressure-treated wood is ideal for high moisture installations and can be safe for direct ground contact. The EPA which reviews the safety and effectiveness of wood preservatives has never found any unreasonable risk to human health and environment from the preservatives used in pressure-treated wood. So, you can use pressure-treated wood for a variety of ourdoor projects from raise garden beds and planters to decks, arbors and furniture. It’s growing in the south of using smart sustainable forestry practices. In southern pine forests, more trees are planted each year than are harvested. This ensures that locally grown southern pine would be around for generations to come. A number of resources on the web to help you learn more about pressure-treated wood. We think of wood as being brown, but actually it’s a very green building material. Trees absorb carbon dioxide while releasing oxygen back into the air, so they act like giant air filters. They reduce energy cost by providing shade around homes and buildings, and they slow water evaporation from the ground. Wood decking has the lowest environmental impact as compared with plastic, composites, steel and concrete building materials. Producing wood decking releases the least amount of greenhouse gases, and produces the least amount of water and air pollution. And wood is the best insulator against heat and cold, making it very energy efficient. Perhaps most importantly wood is a renewable resource, unlike other materials which are made with precious and limited fossil fuels. It’s been a lot of talks about using other materials to reduce our dependence on wood, and when you look at the fact, it doesn’t make sense. Wood is the only one hundred percent renewable, recyclable and reusable building product we have. Production of the trees is powered by the sun, steel, aluminum, plastic and concrete require using nonrenewable gas petroleum. Wood is naturally biodegradable. When it decomposes, it riches the soil. The lord of wood is that its natures of material, entirely sustainable and renewable. People had been building with wood for centuries. Why? Because there is no substitute for the looking and the feel of real wood. That’s my time, thank for yours. For “How to” videos, project plans and other great tips, go to realoutdoorliving.com.
