鹿呀野羊呀，一看见狐狸后头跟着老虎，都吓得撒腿就逃。老虎看了，还以为他们真害怕狐狸，没想到他们害怕的正是他自己。

“狐假虎威”就是从这个故事来的。“假”是“借”。有人仗别人的势力欺负人，可以说他是“狐假虎威”。故事中说狐狸借老虎的威风，反过来欺骗了老虎，后来用这个成语并没有这层意思。
